Abrha Milaw, Gelete Burka Extend Winning Ways at Paris Marathon - DyeStat Road Race Round-Up - 4/14/19Published by
All Eyes on Paris Before the Boston MarathonBy Adam Kopet of DyeStat Abrha Milaw and Gelete Burka, both of Ethiopia, won the Paris Marathon Sunday, battling cold temperatures as they made their way around the sights of the French capital. Milaw pushed the pace early in the men’s race with the help of three pacemakers. Eventually a lead pack of 10 men collected together. That pack reached halfway in 1:02:15, putting them on pace to break Kenenisa Bekele’s course record of 2:05:03 from 2014. However, the hot early pace did not last over the hills on the second half of the course. In the end, it was Milaw breaking away from the field and denying Kenya’s Paul Lonyangata from winning for the third straight year in Paris. Milaw crossed the finish line in a personal best 2:07:05. It was his second straight victory. Fellow Ethiopian Asefa Mengistu finished 20 seconds back of Milaw. Lonyangata was third in 2:07:29. In the women’s race, the lead pack opened with a slow first five kilometers of 17:30, which put them on 2:27 pace in the early going. The pace increased in the second five kilometers, as the lead pack of 12 women reached 10K in 34:13. At the halfway point, six women were left in contention as they ran 1:11:08. Kenya’s Sally Chepyego went to the front and pushed the pace. Only Azmera Gebru, Azmera Abreha and Burka, all of Ethiopia, were able to go with her. However, Chepyego was not able to maintain her fast pace in the closing stages of the race. Burka, on the other had, launched a strong kick in the final kilometer as she ran away from the competition to win in 2:22:47 for her third straight win. Gebru finished five seconds back and Abreha was third in 2:23:35. France’s Clémence Calvin, who had run with the lead pack until Chepyego went to the front, battled back to place fourth in a French record 2:23:41. She had a provisional doping suspension lifted in the days before the race. According to Nancy Gillen of Inside the Games, Calvin refused a doping test while she was in Morocco last month. B.A.A. 5KHagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia and Monicah Ngige of Kenya won the B.A.A. 5K Saturday as part of marathon weekend at the Boston Marathon, running 13:42 and 15:16, respectively.
